Cheap Sword 2
Wakizashi no-signature
Blade length 49.7cm, thickness at the base 7mm, width 2.8cm
This is a wakizashi blade shortened from a longer blade. It is a good quality
blade, probably made by a smith in Seki, Mino province in 15th-16th century
or older.
Steel is fine. And it has a wood grain layer pattern.
Hamon is made of small particles and large particles. Temper line is very
bright and it is dense of hamon particles. And studying the hamon carefully,
you can see the hamon running into the tang. It suggests that the blade
is shortened from longer blade.
Polishing is the classical style (sashikomi style). It is old and it has
some scratches on it due to the many years treatment. But it is a good
sample of what honest work is. Recently, it is difficult to find such an
honest polishing. So we also appreciate this polishing work. You can study
the real face of the blade.
The character of this blade shows the good quality of Mino tradition. The
steel is fine, the hamon is bright, and the temper line is made of dense
hamon particles. You can see much interesting activities like small sweeping
pattern and others when you study the blade in your hand. We believe, this
is a good blade to study what good quality blade in Koto period is.
Tang
Of course, the original tang doesn't remain at all by shortening work.
Some red lacquer description is left on it, but almost impossible to read
it. Probably it was an attribution of the smith, owner's name, or nickname
of the blade.
Habaki is gold foiled double, however it is a little damaged.
