Tsurugi in Hira-sankaku-zukuri style
blade length 15.2cm
This is a very rare style tsurugi. One side is flat and the other side
is ridged. Such a style is called "Hira-sankau zukuri" that is
common on Yari (spears).
This blade is not a masterpiece but interesting.
The tang looks old as Koto period, but we can't settle the age.
The steel is an Ayasugi pattern on the ridged side, a wood grain layer
pattern on the flat side. The jinie particles look large on the flat side,
but less jinie on the ridged side.
The hamon is a narrow straight pattern (hoso-suguha) made of nioi (smallest
particles) and shirake runs along it on the ridged side, a full surface
tampered (hitatsura) made of nie (large particles) on the flat side. The
appearance is interesting.
The left of ridged side.
The right of ridged side.
The flat side.
The steels between the ridged side and the flat side are different. The
ridged side is mild, and the flat side is hard and sensitive for tempering.
The steel particles suggest that. (=>Steel construction Hari-hagane)
It is interesting to study the difference of steel particles and sensitiveness.
