We have a friend who is practicing sword polishing under a professional polisher. He is not very young, but he is keen to become a sword polisher. What is more he is honest. So we support him, and share his actual work here. I hope it will help you to learn what polishing is. And of course, for the purpose to encourage him.

Of course, his work is not very excellent. He will have to learn more. But we appreciate his honest way to polish blade.
Steel layer is ayasugi pattern. But it is not very visible.

This time he tried the classical style (sashikomi style). The steel is clear, and so is hamon. It looks far better than the first challenge.
Challenge 1
It is Hadori style (the modern style) polishing. It is OK that he chose Hadori style for this blade, but the cosmetic is so ugly that it becomes a trouble to see hamon. His work has brought too much shining steel, too wide and strong hadori. Polishing work must be done to see the activities clearly, but this is too horrible to see them.
