Wakizashi "Shitahara Hiroshige"

blade length 54.6cm,  curvature 1.4cm

signature "Shitahara ju Hiroshige" (Hiroshige lives in Shitahara)

This is a wakizashi made by Hiroshige in Shitahara school. Shitahara is a town near by Tokyo. The school was employed by the Shogun government in Edo period. There was another Hiroshige sword in the gallery page. (=> sword31)

The steel is a visible wood grain layer pattern.

Unfortunately an open layer appears at the middle of the length on the reverse side.

The hamon is an irregular pattern, that is gunome, notare, and sunagashi, kinsuji in it. It is mainly made of NIE (large particles).
(The web like white clouds in the pictures are stain on the blade.)

This wakizashi is not a masterpiece as art sword, but it is a genuine Hiroshige blade in Shitahara school. It illustrates a typical character of the school.
Unfortunately the preserve condition was not so good, then the blade has a small rust and many web like stains. But you can clean it with proper treatment for some months. I will add the treatment tools set.

The habaki is made of copper.
